The Journey of Starting a YouTube Channel with My 6-Year-Old Son Nykyta

It all started with a simple idea and a bit of curiosity. Nykyta, my six-year-old son, has been obsessed with video games for as long as I can remember. I think he picked up Roblox when he was around four. One lazy afternoon, I suggested we record ourselves playing together at home—just for fun. To my surprise, it turned out to be a blast.

That one playful moment sparked something bigger. I realized this wasn’t just about playing games. It was about sharing experiences and creating something meaningful together. And just like that, the idea for a YouTube channel was born.

Environment

As luck would have it, we are currently living in Bali, Indonesia, where a friend of ours works in video production and knows the ins and outs of YouTube. With access to his equipment, proper lighting, and some great advice, we recorded a pilot episode. It felt exciting, so we kept going, and before we knew it, we had twenty videos ready to upload.

It’s been just two months since we started the channel, and the response has been encouraging—1,500 subscribers and more than 600 hours of watch time already! It’s just the beginning, though. YouTube is a long game, and I know we need to keep creating, experimenting, and improving as we go.

Building a Game and Bigger Dreams

Beyond the videos, Nykyta and I are working on developing our own game in Roblox. It’s not only a fun project, but it also gives us the chance to dive deeper into game design and coding. It’s incredible to see Nykyta so involved, not just playing games but helping create something from scratch.

At the same time, we’re thinking about new video formats and ways to make the channel even better. There’s so much room to grow—more content ideas, more games, maybe even collaborations in the future. We’re just getting started, and the possibilities are endless.

The Plan Moving Forward

We’re in no rush, though. YouTube success takes time. Right now, this channel is a way for us to have fun and bond. The idea is that eventually, Nykyta will run the channel himself—maybe when he’s around eight or ten years old. Until then, we’ll keep learning together, enjoying the process, and having fun with every new video we make.

I know that sticking with it is key. Consistency matters on YouTube. Even though the journey is just beginning, it’s clear that the more we create, the better we’ll get. Every new video is an opportunity to learn something—whether it’s better editing, new ways to engage with the audience, or simply finding joy in what we do.

Insights from the Journey

  1. Consistency is Key: Success on YouTube doesn’t happen overnight. Staying consistent with uploads helps the channel grow over time and builds a connection with the audience.
  2. Experiment and Improve: Every video is a chance to experiment. Trying new formats, editing styles, or game-related ideas makes content more engaging and keeps things exciting.
  3. Learn from Others: Reading YouTube Secrets by Sean Cannell and Benji Travis provided valuable tips on growing a sustainable channel. Learning from other creators and staying curious makes a difference.
  4. Use Your Network: Having friends with experience in YouTube and video production has been invaluable. Their advice has helped us avoid mistakes and focus on what really matters—making videos we enjoy.
  5. Enjoy the Process: The most important thing is having fun. YouTube is not just about views and subscribers but about creating memories and learning together.

Enjoying Every Moment

What started as a simple afternoon activity has grown into something truly special. It’s not just about views and subscribers; it’s about creating memories and learning together. Whether we’re recording new videos, brainstorming ideas, or working on our Roblox game, every step of the way has been a joy.

There’s still a long way to go, and we’re in this for the long run. For now, it’s all about having fun and improving with each video. I know that with time, effort, and a little patience, the channel will grow into something even more exciting—and one day, Nykyta will take the reins himself.

Until then, we’ll keep playing, recording, and learning. The journey has just begun, and we’re excited to see where it takes us—one video at a time.
